When putting the aquascape in how close to the water line (or how much water on top) should the rocks be, I mean what's best for the inhabitants both fish and coral?

Was just wondering if the is unspoken rules people go by for that, I for sure don't want an algae farm up on top :anguished-face:

there is no rule, it mostly an aesthetics thing. I like to go up about 2/3 of the way up.

Just keep in mind that the top may become exposed during water changes, depending how high you go. Some of my rocks end up out of water during water changes.

Thanks for the answers, I wasn't certain but I definitely will want to keep low enough to stay in the water during water changes.

all in what you are trying to accomplish with the scape.
hiding the gyres, overflow, heater and return was a must for me.
part of mine breaks the surface at full water level.
my bta loves it up there.
it's tips break the surface, and i don't mean from a water change.
i have softies, gorgonia's, zoas and lps that are clear of the water during water changes with no adverse effects.
