How deep is your probe?

With a new sump, I recently noticed that if my pH probe gets to be ~2.5-3" deep in the water, my pH reading drops almost .2 when the pump stops and water level rises about another inch. If I keep it at about 1" things are stable, as the probe is then only about 2" deep when the pump stops.

Is this normal or do I have a probe problem?

I jeep mine
 
I keep mine so that 1 inch is showing above water. Seems to read fine with pump running or not.
