I am new and doing a lot of reading and research. When reading about various coral species there are references to high flow, moderate flow etc. How are these flow rates defined? One man's high flow could be another's medium.

Scientifically CM per second. In hobby terms H M L and in person, experience. they all like different things. One zoa may not like the same flow as another. Same with light. Usually however they are close..
Bets to see it in person if you can. go to corals stores (friends too) and look at their established tanks, not usually the frags, the ones that are growing.and youtube is a good resource.
Buy cheap whatever it is you like and experiment. Move them around. Its more craft than science. Craft uses science.

Always keep learning.
