How did you get started in saltwater?

I got started due to my two brothers. I have one who's been doing it for over 12 years now. The other for about 5 years also. I've been doing it for 3 1/2 years myself. Growing up as a kid we had fresh water fish a lot and then seeing the difference between fresh water and salt water fish. We all know there is no comparing. It's like apples and pears, it's just not the same. My first tank was purchased over the net via Craig's list and was a well established one, 65 gal and now I'm on my second tank; 90 gal. Went from T5 to LED's, went from 20 gal sump to 40 gal refugium. Change in wave pumps, heaters and return pump as well. Things can only get better with time from here on out.

In highschool I went to the local pet-store (the interesting kind you know (reptiles and fish)) to stare at their poison dart frogs once every week (I had kept lizards and salamanders of various kinds up until then, and had started building a PDF viv). Occasionally I would pass their two saltwater fish tanks and found my self looking into those more and more every day. What caught me was the calcerous algae and a juvenile lion fish. I started reading about it, got some books and started planning, but my living situation wouldn't allow it until over ten years later. In the mean time I studied marine bio (focused my career on scientific diving) and worked as an aquarium technician at the local science center which led me to my PhD position (starting next week). Now I'm redoing my second tank and I am a fully fledged reefer, ready to speak at our next annual reefing symposium.

Wow!!! this thread was buried for 8 years!!!. I walk into a fish store back in the 80's, saw a lion fish. All over from there.

I had fresh water tanks growing up and even after I got married I always had a 20g..I decided I wanted to do it again and was all set to get a 30 or 40 g fresh water tank..Then during a search for equipment I was seeing saltwater articles and thought "How cool would that be?"
So I spent the next 2 month reading, searching and talking on forums and getting info and advice until my head was ready to explode!!
Now it's been 3 months and I have an awesome echo system that is thriving with way to little fish and coral so now I'm thinking upgrade!
