okay guys I’m a little confused I have a pair of clowns that are from my 75g reef tank the tank is thriving and I’m ready to take on the task of breeding them I have done extensive research on breeding just one problem they will be going into a 20g tank I don’t want to wait a month to cycle a whole new tank how do I “reuse” water from a water change to start a new tank is it as simple as just dumping the water in my new tank? Any help would be awesome thank you!

You could use a sponge filter. Put one in the sump and keep it there until you’re ready to use it, then transfer to the breeding tank. If you’re not using any meds in the that tank and have some live rock in your sump, you could use that too. I’d buy a bottle of Dr. Tim’s One and Only to play it safe. I’d get airstone or something else to agitate the surface. I know nothing about breeding this is how I’d get the tank ready. I’d test for ammonia before you start. Good luck!

I have heard clowns like the 4" or 6" terra cotta pots to lay eggs on. You could put one in your sump for a while (at least 2 weeks) to collect good bacteria and use a sponge filter that has been seeded in the sump (as mentioned above). Reusing the water won't carry the cycle to the new tank. The beneficial bacteria that grows on the surface of the rocks and items in the tank is what will bring the cycle. A sponge filter can house the BB also.

I want to avoid putting anything other than the fish and a pot as the breeding surface so the sponge filter will be able to hold enough B.B. for 20g? I don’t have a sump on the 20g

Yes, it should. They are sized for however many gallons. I would go up 1 size. Just adds more surface area.

let that sponge sit in your current sump for about 30 days so the bacteria can colonize it, or get some Dr. Tim's or other bottled bacteria to seed the sponge.
