I’ve been fighting this for a couple of months. I first thought it was just detritus; I have a minimum cleanup crew, but there is a good flow, and I run a 10-minute “nutrient export” cycle twice a day. I can siphon it out for the most part, and I do it a couple of days a week.
When I siphon it, it comes back within a day. It doesn’t disappear a night, and blacking out the tank doesn’t seem to have much effect on it. It’s also not on the rocks; it’s just on the sand or appears to be just there. Nothing comes off the rocks when I blow them off with a small pump or baster.
I’m guessing this is Dino’s. My nutrients went to nearly zero about a month ago; I’m slowly getting them back up. I think I may be over-filtering the water. This problem started after I replaced my socks with a KLIR filter and switched to a Deltec skimmer a few weeks later.
I’ve adjusted how often and how much the filter rolls, and I’m considering not skimming 24/7. My skimmer isn’t skimming much anyway right now. I’ve also increased feeding both the fish and the coral.
Do any of you have any ideas about what this might be? Am I on the right track with thinking it’s Dino’s? Any input on making it go away is appreciated, preferably without using chemicals. But if that’s the way I have to clean it up, let me know what you think I should use.
I've included a picture of my current water parameters.
