so i got my ro unit this past weekend been making water but it's not mixed yet. before i would mix it to 0.022 but then i forgot to take into consideration the salt already in the tank when i do water changes so it might actually raise the salinity.

is this the right way to do it or do i mix at a lesser salinity and if so how less?

Add rodi water to your bucket or whatever you mix in.

Add powerhead
Slowly add salt as directed by manufacturers / usualy 1/2 C. / gallon.

Do you have a refractometer?

Always mix same salinity as the tank, you are taking out a set volume and just adding that same volume back, nothing should change. Mix very well as directed.

Usually most target around 1.025 sg
Do you have an ATO?

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you are asking, but if your target salinity is 1.022 and that's what you keep in your tank, then you would mix your new water to 1.022 and there would be no net change.

If you need a calculator to determine how to to bring your water to a certain salinity, use this: https://www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/DirectSaltCalculator.php

Make sure when you're topping off water in between changes use just the rodi water and not salt or tour salinity is going to rise.

Salt doesn't evaporate. Water does. Water changes are done with salt water (mixed to the same salinity as the tank) and topping off for evaporation is done with free RO/DI.

thanks yea i got a bit confused about topping off with fresh ro and mixing especially since sometimes i don't top off for an entire week but thats just a bad habit i need to fix. yea i mixed it with my power head and use a cheap plastic hydrometer for now going to buy a refractometer later and no i don't have an ATO

Don't forget temp also don't shock anything.

i don't temp. used to keep a thermometer at all times but at room temp throughout an entire year the temp was steady at the range i want it at even during the evenings. also not keeping any corals or anything that requires a steady temperature outside of these ranges only fish for now until i fix up my tank
