I have been planning on getting a snowflake eel for a while now but I have heard that they cannot be in copper. Many people say the parasites(Marine Velvet and ich) can hitch a ride on the eel and when put into a aquiram with fish they spring off and start sucking the fish alive. Is there a way to insure my eel does not have Marine Velvet and ich?

You would want to treat an eel with CP.

Your other option is to acclimate a freshwater black Molly to SW. Place in tank with the eel and see if the Molly gets hit. The theory is since it's a fish that came from freshwater it will have zero resistance to marine parasites. This is so long as the eel doesn't make it a snack!

I have the same inquiry as SKILLKING21 , also would leaving a tank fallow of fish except for a snowflake eel for 3 months eradicate ich and velvet out of my DT ?

I also had bad bacterial infection which wiped out most of my fish including ones that was thriving for over a year , thats why after removing all the fish ( except for the eel ) i dosed Kanaplex 3 times as maximum recommended ( with no significant issues to my corals at all ) and planing to start a complete 3 weeks dosing of Metroplex as well just to make sure my DT is ready for fish once they finish the Quarantine process

Eventually i decided to take out all the fishes i had in my mixed reef tank because of the number of parasites and bacterial infections that I couldn’t even count instantly infecting any kind of fish stock i add directly to my DT

I set up a 75 gallon QT with a 2 litre media reactor filled with Seachem Matrix media connected to return pump + wave maker to move water around + air pump + heater

After letting it run for a while and completing the cycling period i added fish and with in the second day dosed coppersafe and checking concentration with hanna copper checker and keeping it at 1.80

Prior to complete quarantine I had to add a new batch of fish to QT as well and noticed some had type of a fin rot , so i added Metroplex + kanaplex as well

Fishes seems more active now and swimming around more normally and will keep observing with in the coming days

@SkillKing21 - you can get CP on eBay and here is a link. The seller has very high ratings and good feedback. Obviously, you want to make sure you're dosing the correct amount.

Just use caution with eBay CP. The purity is unknown if it is not pharmaceutical grade. I'd only be willing to use it after sending a sample out to be lab tested for purity to make sure proper dosing is achieved.

Could I do the Tank Transfer Method on the eel?
old thread that I am reviving since I have the same question.

i'd have to assume TTM would be perfectly fine with an eel. but that wouldn't help the risk of velvet.

i picked up CP from an online supplier, Fishman Chemical - https://www.fishchemical.com/FULL-PRODUCT-LIST-CHLOROQUINE-PHOSPHATE-22937.Item.html

@Humblefish you still recommend them as a CP source right? i seem to recall you saying tested at least 95% purity?

Do eels tolerate CP perfectly fine?

Yes the fishman product is solid. It's really really close to pharmaceutical grade CP. +/-98% pure (it's what I use).

CP is the best to use on an eel. As TTM would not cover velvet. At least not using the time frames for transfers used to treat ich. Eels should tolerate CP without issues.

Agree. I’ve used copper on a snowflake eel in the past successfully but I’ve had a lot of trouble with it so CP is best.
