So I think I've tried everything under the sun to reduce my nitrates and nothing has helped. Currently I have a little over a half inch of sand in my sump/fuge and anywhere from small rubble where the vortech blew the sand away to 2.5" of sand in my display. I think it may be the ever shifting sand bed causing my problems so I've been thinking about removing most or all of it. I figured I would start with the small amount in my sump (I've heard this is where a lot of ones problems start in a small tank, I have 32 total gallons with displacement) but it sits almost level with the floor, anyone have any good ideas on how to get the sand out? After that I figured if I noticed a difference I would remove the dts sand, I'd like to start with removing half of the depth or so but for aesthetic purposes would like to keep a thin layer. Is this all possible or am I spelling disaster removing portions of sand releasing heaven knows what, leading to a permanent crash of the tank. If it can be done whats the best way to go about this? I.e. how much how often, and is it ok to remove top layers of sand and leave the bottom. Hopefully this makes sense I wanted to throw it up before I turn in for the night. If not just say so and ill tale some more time tomorrow to spell things out in a better order and with more detail. One other thing that just came to mind. I put the lid threaded side down from a buffer container in my sand for my clam to attach to. Do I need to worry about what has happened to the sand sitting under there? It's been in place about 4 months with the tank being fully cycled... Well thinking about it now, I think it will have completed cycle 6 months ago this Sunday. All questions comments or concerns are greatly appreciated. Thanks R2R! You truly are a smart and amazing group!!!

If your just doing your sump then Count it as a WC and just take all of it out. Shut the system down, suck out water and sand with a shop vac. Yea you heard me! There great for doing this. I used mine on my 75 when i removed EVERYTHING in one whack. Now i run bb on my tanks.

SO after you vac out the sand then return clean water into the sump and start it back up. Easy pease (im not the one doing it ) Hehehe Just do it I had PO problems And some nitrates. After going BB i read 000 across the board. infact i feed heavy to make up some Nitrates.

I just removed my DSB which is 5 years old, I did it today. Removed all rock, fish and coral to my 45 gallon sump, and drained main display, trashed the water and removed all sand.

I will fill display with new ro and mix salt, then start the flow from sump again and hope for the best. That dirty sand, see ya

Thinking about removing my sand as well.
Anyone had a bad experience after removing all the sand?

I have a 5" sandbed and i have no nitrate problems. If you are having high nitrates you have excess nutrients. That can be from overfeeding, improper skimming, incorrect water changes etc. Do you vacumn your sand bed when you do water changes? A dsb can be very benifical in the overall health of your reef.

Um ...... I think DSB are on the same page as Undergravel filters... Least in my eyes

I would never tell some one to do a dsb. Time bomb waiting to go off... Shallow is cool as long as you clean it. But then still you cant get at all of it. so some stays DIRTY.... Ewwww Lol

JOIN THE DARK SIDE................. go BB!

I've done ALOT of research on dsb and I'd love to have them buy they wouldn't work whatsoever in my small tank. The sand is stirred by the vortech other than that its a 5g wc weekly (32 gallons TOTAL system volume) went from 3 fish (pair of inch long clowns and a 2.5-3" yellow coris wrasse) to just the clowns fed 1x per day at the most, I've tried EVERYTHING, so I think it will be bb or bare sump and like a ssss-ssb. Now to find a shop vac lol

Well just started getting sand out via water change. I thought I had made some decent progress but only ended up with about an inch and a half of it in a 5 gallon bucket. If that's all I get for a 5 gallon water change... This I'd going to take forever lol. Ill update with some tests in a few days when things settle in a bit

careful removing a dsb if that's what you have in the sump. if your doing a dsb then its going to let go some rotten gas. and cause spikes. fyi

Update, so my DSB was 3 inches. 5 years old, I removed live rock and all fish/corals and nems. I have a 38gallon with 40 gallon sump full of rock and cheato. I disconnected sump, and drained water from display and removed all sand, put new water back in display, warmed it up, turned sump back on, pit rock and animals back in. Oh my god, my sps never looked so good, my 2 rose name look great, the one nem always had long stringy arms, now they are bulbs, amazing. The sand and water was like a sewage plant, it was nasty. I am so glad to get that sand out.

It is your tank and you can do whatever you want. I have had a dsp for years and have excellent results. I vacumn it with every water change. If you are having nitrate problems you have a high nutrient level. Wheter that be excess phospate levels or from overfeeding. Maybe you need to test and and find out.

Well I've been working a lot lately so I haven't had time to do any testing but everything looks the same, just found out my dad got an electric syphoning vacuum for his tank so ill have to steal it next week for my water change, should be a bit more efficient than trying to syphon out sand from a sump barely 3" off the floor lol. Ill try to test tomorrow if I have time. Among several errands I am signing for a loan for a long over due new to me car. Currently mine has just shy of 214k miles on it and its cosmetically a mess lol. Will be squaring everything away tomorrow for pick up on saterday, way excited lol!
