how do you change your water, and when?

I'm repeating the same water change setup I had on my old system only bigger this time.
80G tank fed and overflowing into sump. Can be disconnected from sysetm by closing water valve feeding it. then I have 80 G I can discard without stopping the flow from sump to tank.
I have an 80G water mixing station in which I collect RODI water and add salt to level and mix for a day or two.
Water change goes like this:
-Collect 80 G of RODI water (automated) add salt and mix for a day.
-Turn of valve feeding water change container.
-Turn on pump to empty water change tank into drain.
-Turn on pump topump water from water mixing station to water change container.
-Slightly open the valve to start circulation to water change system, this way water change happens very slow and tank acclimates to the changes very slow.
-after few hours open valve completely.

In case of spike or issues I can discard water from water change container. Then change 80 G from sump. Fill water change barrel Have a 40G freshwater container always full so only have to colect 40 G more (less than 6 hours with a 200GPD unit) mix salt for 4-5 hours and do the change and in 12 hours I would have changed 160 G of water.

Wow

My system is similar to Ronnie's. I change about 1% daily using an automatic system (a dual head Reef Filler pump) on a timer. It changes it very slowly, in and out at the same time, for a bunch of 15 minute periods day and night.

I draw water from an 88 gallon reservoir (two 44 gallon Brute cans plumbed together) and send the exported water down a sink drain. The water is added to a sump, and withdrawn just upstream from tha tpoint in a different part of the sump.

With such a system, one does not need toheat the new water, nor even to match the tank salinity if you want to alter the tank salinity over time.

My is similar to Randy's....I change out about 3 gal per day. I pull the new water from a 55gal barrel in my garage.

I top off with fresh water about once a week and do a 25% change after turning off pumps and blasting the rocks every other week.

Just like the picture shows!! 10-15% weekly into 5 gallon buckets. I use black rubber hose and an old (un-used) pond pump to siphon the water, pretty quick and simple. After mixing the saltwater for about 4 hours the water change only takes about 10 minutes, turn off the pumps and blast the rocks with the new water. Corals and fish seem to love it!
