How do you detach a trochus snail?

My trochus snails have congregated on a nice cleaned-up rock and I want to get one up to an algae-covered rock higher up. They stick so hard that I feel like I'd kill them if I pull any harder trying to detach. Is there any secret to detaching them or can I safely pull hard until they detach? Or do I just leave them alone?

They'll go to where the food is. Mostly at night while the lights are off.
