how do you get such good pictures

i have been trying for years to get good pictures of my corals .. what do you photobugs use ? sometimes they look washed out or the colors look faded .. can someone help me with my issues ..

I have a sony A700 dslr and never could figure out how to get good pictures with it. When I try to customize the white balance the sand turns white and everything has a yellow color to it
