Use them for improvement and a learning experience

Over the many years Ive had tons of ups and downs. As for losses I generally sit back and try to look at it with a clear head and see where I went wrong. The money part sucks and sometimes I don't replace the more expensive fish Ive bought

Honestly? Not that great. I've been in the hobby for a long time.

I've lost my share of fish and coral. Probably your share and the next person that posts share as well. It's never easy for me to lose an animal that's in my care.

But I try to learn from my mistakes and make the next attempt better. Because if I'd stop after, then it really was all for nothing. I try to make that loss into something to learn from and grow as a reef keeper and a person.

Learn from everything but especially from losses.

In life, failure is part of the journey for me... often needed to progress.

With a tank, it is different. The tank is not just about you. It is time to take measure of yourself and your situation since you are responsible for other living things. Need to reflect on what happened, why you did to make it happen, what you did to stop it from happening and then have a honest self-discussion of if you can stop this from happening next time.

If you can learn and do better, then that is one thing. Chalking it up to "who cares" or "somebody else's fault" can be bad for the next fish that you buy. Sometimes people need to move on if they cannot do better.

When I feel that I no long have the desire or ability to get better, I am out of the hobby. The fish deserve that. It is never about the money for me, but the care that I owe the things that live in my house. Even if I quit, this is not failure, but a success in recognizing that I no longer have "it."

You cannot grow as a human being if you do not learn from your mistakes.
You either keep going or quit maybe realizing that that failure may not be your thing.
Either way,you live, you learn.

Thanks guys right now I'm taking it as an opportunity to rescape the tank and clean , really sucks though since it was going well for a long while. Also at 19 bucks a pop those fiji devils hurt : /

probably gonna start with some fresh saltwater tomorrow.

in the meantime any suggestions on what I should restock with when ready it is a 36 gallon bowfront.

I move quickly to correct what was wrong. Then I mourn. There are some fish (toby puffer) that I'm not sure I could own again because the loss hurt too much.

And having friends in the hobby, here or irl, helps.

I cry my heart out then figure out what went wrong and get back on the horse. Lost my whole tank to an electrical failure a while back, awful. I feel for you. Take time to grieve and then figure out what went wrong and go back at it :( here if you need anything

= immediately begin fallow and quarantine this time, like all the posts in Jay's forum shows. for sure don't buy things from a pet store and add them without fallow and quarantine/ this will repeat in eight months or so

the way to handle a failure is to reef oppositely regarding fish disease control. if this was a power outage loss that would be different/due to bad luck, but 50% fish loss is preventable, it's why Jay's fish at the zoo don't just all of a sudden die one day. he uses strict management protocols.

*even if a heater was pinned as this cause, it was still coming with no disease preps. takes 8 mos to a year to manifest per the disease forum.

It utterly sucks as we're playing god.

Had a wipe out twice. Once attributed to myself and the other an accident which happened whilst away. A HOB refugium clogged with the cheato that went a-stray causing the tank to empty two thirds of the water over the floor - and what was left in the tank was heavily diluted due to the auto top off kicking in. Trust me - that was divorce grounds!

The other me coming up with cocktails to wipe out dinos. Which I still have, I'm fairly sure the same strain I did when I started this hobby a couple of decades ago!

Live and learn, do better.

Good advice there QT protocols work well if you have plenty of space to work with I'm running this tank in a tiny apartment = / , this just sucks though had the tank running for 2 years and 2 more before that as a 5 gallon.

Funny how I had less trouble with the tiny tank
If any tank was gonna boil fish I forsure though it would have been that.

I treat all failures as a learning experience. But there is of course mourning.

+ 1 on a temp controller. An Inkbird ITC-308 is only $35 on amazon, protection per dollar its one of the best safties to have in this hobby IMO.

Sorry for your losses! I just went through similar with disease, lost 9 of 11 fish in just a few days. But the show must go on.

Yeah definitely gonna get that controller also an update , the only fish that survived the ordeal was the maroon clown , go figure the only fish to survive a dip in satan's hot tub would be the clown.

Update got home today it's a complete wipe not a single fish survived , going to run a test tomorrow to see what might have caused it.
