How do you Insulate Your Frags??

The thing is I can’t spend $30-$40 on complete styrofoam boxes some suggest. I know it’s the best but I can’t afford it.

I ordered corals from an online retailer and he used the foam below. Do you know what it’s called and where I can get it? Or is there something similar around that’s cost effective?

So usually people will buy a large sheet of styrofoam and get to cutting. Cheap and effective option.

Cheapest and very effective way is to go to homedepot and buy a 1/2 inch or 1inch foam board insulation and cut them in the right lenght to what ever box u want to use. Usually a 6x6x6 or 8x8x8 from ebay is enough room to ship a couple frags. Also watch out for the weather of where u are and where u live. You might need a heatpack or coldpack.

Thank you brotha. I noticed budman shipped some Coral like that and it looked cost effective. When I went they only had 2 inch though. I have to go back and check it out.

Bought some zoas through the forum recently and was shocked to see them arrive in a non-insulated box. Please, folks, insulation isnt optional when shipping live animals

They may be too big, but ask your veterinarian or pharmacist if they have any insulated boxes they are throwing out to call you to come get them. We throw away so many insulated boxes at my work that refrigerated medications are shipped in.

A lot of LFS throw away the styrofoam boxes that their live stock comes in. I have gone home with a ton, as they are great for other things. You could cut those up and use them for packing. I have used that in the past, who knows how many times, to ship macro full of pods. Works well, all has arrived alive, you just have be sure to check weather for the route and add a heat pack or ice pack if needed.

That's $85 for a 25pack of 6x6x5. You can literally buy like 50 pack of boxes from ebay for $30 and a whole sheet of insulation foam from homedepot for like $8. And that whole sheet will most likely be good for about 15-20 boxes.
And if u get lucky with a "good guy" in homedepot he will most likely to cut ur sheet of foam on the plywood cutting machine they have. That's what I happened to me. So just asked them.

Cutting foam with a saw leaves edges that are not smooth and don't form a good seal. Plus, what a giant PITA. I sell coral frags very cheap and even I don't blink at the cost of insulated boxes. I mean, the heat packs cost about that much. Part of the cost of shipping.
But as long as people are using SOME kind off insulated box I don't complain

So I would suggest ordering boxes and bags from Infinity Packaging Supplies. I would then go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a sheet of 3/4" insulation. It cost like $16 and gives you enough to make up several boxes. You can put boxes together for like a $1.50.
