I have a blue spot puffer that I love! He was quite fat for a while... but now he is skinny I can see his beak is growing and I am nervous. I bet he was FAT b/c when he entered my reef he ate the shrimp / CUC / bristleworms.

I have a 75 gallon w/ blue tang, yellow tang, flame angel, hali wrasse, 3 blue green chromis (pigs!). I have been putting in cut up crabs/mussels/shrimp but I don't understand how this wears his beak down? He does seem to get some of this but I am sure he is skinny and sure his beak is protruding.

Photos of the food you feed your puffers??

I have a valentini puffer and I throw in a clam on the half shelf about once a week for him to much on and it also picks stuff off the rock. I have had it for about 6 months I have not noticed the beak grow.

Do the other fish also go for the clam? I find that my blue tang pulls off most of the flesh in a few bites.... my puffer eats the left over bits in the water column but I don't see him needing to eat it from the shell?

My yellow tang and crab also gets in on the action. You could try smearing some on a rock to get him to grind some of the beak.
