How do you know if your over feeding your fish ?

If you have excess algae you're overfeeding your fish. If you don't, then you're doing it right. However, if your corals appear to be starving then you're not feeding enough.

The way I see it, overfeed is relative to the capacity of your skimmer and nutrient export, not necessarily how much your fish can eat, because we want some nutrient in the water column to sustain our corals.

Since I currently have a large tank with few fish, I feed a lot, not because my fish really need that much food, but because I need those nutrients in my water to sustain my corals.

That being said, I don't just dump tons of food in the tank, I feed often and enough food that my fish eat as much as they can, not more than they can...

I only have two fish and I just give them a pinch of brine but they always appear hungry. I know that they would probly keep on eating but it just makes me want to give them more. I also started growing some kind of red stuff in my sump which im assuming its cyano. I might be over feeding.

Running a skimmer? Do you have Cheato in the sump? Got a high Nitrate or Phospahte reading?

Fish are pigs they will eat and eat. As others have stated keep an eye on your water parameters and any hint of algae growth slack off a little on your feeding.

I feed a whole cube of brine shrimp. In my 72 bow front each night and only have three chromis and a small kole tang and they act like they are always hungry.

My definition of overfeeding is having a lot of uneaten food. I have a way I can be sure 99% of the food I put in the tank gets eaten.

I feed about 17 fish in my 150, chromis are excellent for getting all of the small stuff out of the water too.

I feed a mix of formula 1, formula 2, a cube of frozen brine and a cube of frozen mysis everyday, and an algae sheet every other day. (I feed coral separately). I add a small amount of formula pellets while I thaw the cube of brine and mysis in a red party cup full f water. Once all of the pellets are eaten, I add some more pellets (like 8 at a time and I make sure the fish are getting all of them and they aren't blowing into my rockwork). After about five to six pinches of formula 1 and 2 pellets, I suck up some of my frozen food into a turkey baster. I squirt a small amount into the water and watch the fish eat all f it. I then squirt a little more out of the turkey baster and watch the fish eat all of it. I continue this until the fish are not eating or all of the frozen food is gone. I don't have algae problems, have good coral growth an color, and know I am not overfeeding because I see all of te food get eaten.

Vivid aquariums has a video on YouTube demonstrating this method.
