One of my FB buddies, Ben Johnson from Captive Aquatic Ecosystems, posted on his wall about pronouncing certain aquarium/reef terms. I figured it would be fun and educational for us to compare terms! Basically just type them out how you think they should be said. LOL!

This one was from Ben:

Chaetomorpha algae is pronounced (KI TOE MORE FUH) not cheato.

Everyone around here says CHEETO, like the chips. They always look at me like an idiot when I say KEY TOE.

How about Nudibranch? I always hear people say NOO DEE BRANCH but it think it's pronounced NOO DE BRANK.

NOO DEE BRANCH is a much funnier word to me though. :D

I hear these A LOT, so much that I sometimes question myself over which is "correct". Which ones do you think are the correct pronunciations?

Acan

Ay-can
Ack-han

Favia

Here's one that always puzzled me... Spongodes. I've heard SPUN-GODEZ, SPUN-GOY-DEEZ, and SPUN-JODEZ. Anyone know the correct pronunciation? I believe it's the second, but not sure.

I always say montipora MON TEE PORE UH but I saw an Eric Borneman fragging video and he says MON TIP RAH and Acropora A CROP RAH.

Is is caulerpa - CALL-ERR-PUH or CALL-OOP-ER-UH or neither...lol

Good thread I always just kinda mumble through the words when talking to more knowledgeable people haha
But I think we are raising more questions than answers lol

Same here. I always said Monty Porah and Acro Porah, but I think the correct way is Mon TIP orah and Ah Crop orah

Pocillopora

Pox-il-o-pore-uh
Po-cil-o-pora
or pocil-apora?

Most of the names being talked about here are scientific names. Scientific names are mostly latin with a little greek and the occasional improve word (Like "EINSTEINium"). So for the most part they use the rules of Latin with a bit of greek every now and then.

I'm still not calling them mon-tip-rahs...everyone would look at me like I was speaking gibberish. plus I would have to start typing montip instead of monti in the forums.

Does that mean it is mil-lep-rah (millepora)...because I have not once heard it called that but it would follow the same pronunciation pattern and stressed syllables as mon-tip-rah ;)
