How do you remove a scallop?

I have several scallops in my tank, they've been attached to some of my "main" rocks for quite a while now and are slowly pushing them out of place. I was wondering how you remove them. No, the rocks can't be removed from the system, way too big. They seem to realllly be stuck on there. I feel that if I use any more force (or a butter knife for leverage), I'm going to hurt/damage them. Am I being too careful or is there a trick I'm missing?

Cut the strings they use to attach to the rock or surface...but don't pull.

Use an xacto blade with the handle and carefully cut the filaments underneath it.
