How harmful to nature are we being

While I am by no means a tree hugger, I prefer fish that were bred in captivity and coral the same.

Why, it isn't that many right. crap there are people all over the world with reef tanks.

I know, this may make it hard to get some corals. Well, I may have to do without. Our reefs need to be protected as well as the animals that live there.

All my Discus were grown by breeders and they are awesome. Don't need to be able to say oooooh, look at him he came from the Amazon river.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound mean, but I guess I can't say it any other way. We need to protect these eco systems that look so beautiful during Shark Week.

I certainly didnt mean to say your ideas were wrong. I'm totally onboard protecting what nature we have. I certainly wouldnt support a hobby if it meant ecosystems were going down faster than South American Tropical Rainforest trees....

I believe and hope the companies and governments that are players in this hobby are conservatively collecting. I would hope their desire for yrs and yrs of revenue streams would lead them to collect conservatively

Guys we should try to Create some sort of organization to protect the ocean, where all our livestock once came from. REEF2REEF is basically already across all of the USA and also some other countries too so maybe we can start something people can do in their own communities or states. Anyone think this is a good idea or am I going crazy again lol

I feel as you guys are overestimating how popular this hobby is. Suggesting that it accounts for anything above 1 or 2 percent of fish harvested from the ocean would be insane. But it’s different for corals. Yes we may be the only ones who harvest them. But the way I see it were preserving them. Just taking some frags. Maybe one day, when the oceans are suitable to support corals again, we can reintroduce frags to dead reefs.

A study published in 2016 found that at least 50% of marine aquarium fish tested positive for cyanide exposure, most likely the result of the fish having been harvested from the ocean using cyanide broadcast across the reef to temporarily stun the fish so that they can be easily scooped up. The article below claims up to 90% are collected in this manner.

Each live fish caught with cyanide destroys about a square yard of coral, according to biologist Sam Mamauag of the International Marinelife Alliance, in the Philippines. Even in lower doses, cyanide can cause coral bleaching and mess with the coral’s biology. Sometimes, the coral is killed outright.
Once the coral’s dead, the entire ecosystem collapses. Without coral, reef fish, crustaceans, plants, and other animals no longer have food, shelter, and breeding grounds. The effects ripple up the food chain, affecting thousands of species”

I don’t think that people purchasing fish at their LFS realize that there is a substantial chance that there is a square yard of destroyed coral left behind from that one single fish getting to the store. Multiply that by the 10 million marine fish imported to the US each year for the aquarium trade, and the billion that are likely sold across the globe. It’s hard for me to imagine how anyone can assume this is a minor issue relating to the world’s reefs that are already facing pressure and mass bleaching from ocean acidification and rising temperatures.

If you want to get real about it. Everything humans do is taxing on the ecosystem and inhabitants. We are a 2 legged virus that destroys everything. Every thing is about money and wants. We have all the fancy corals, fish, and equipment because we are willing to pay for them. If there was no market, no corals would be harvested, no equipment would be made, no colorful fish would be taken.

Over population and raping the earth will eventually catch up before alien or asteroids. We are destructive by nature caring about our wants we claim to be needs. Myself included. You can try to say your a good responsible person, but at the end of the day you are perpetuating the cycle.

This even includes third world countries that went taking only what they need to survive into chasing the paper dollar.

We are destroying this planet over a shiny gold piece of metal and a 2.61 inch wide by 6.14 inch long piece of paper.

That being said, we as reefers try to be responsible with what we can purchase, grow, and give away. Unfortunately, this docent apply for the rest of the population.

I like to believe that we as every day citizens are a bit better than we give ourselves credit for. I saw a study at one point that said 80 percent of harmful pollution was caused by large companies. We need to hold the places we buy are things from to the the same ideal we hold each other too.
