How high are your LEDs off the water?

18" depth with LEDs 3" off the top. I'm only running them at about 60% power though.

How is that possible Reefcowboy? my v3 is 15" above water surface and i'm not even seeing 500 par at 91 percent on all channels. 500 par below 12" of water just seems strange. I'm seeing 250 around 10" below the water surface.

I'm right at the waters surface on mine, if I had to guess I'm pushing something like 10-15% max intensity

I'm not familiar with the details, but maybe you have different lenses? That would do it.

Could just be the picture, but it looks like you have a wicked hot-spot in the middle of a whole lot of dark shade. What happens if you raise the fixture and compensate by increasing the intensity? (Just curious. It should remove a good percentage of that shade.)

Here's a better picture, it's a kessil a360we. I can raise it any higher because I gutted out the old unit when I got this tank. The light is resting on the plastic light cover

Not really an issue as far as a hot spot, the monti's , the birdsnest, and the other corals seem to be doing great. The only thing is that in the far corners, there are some shaded spots, this forced me to place more low light corals in those areas

Makes perfect sense then! Just looked at your build thread – that's a pretty slick mounting for the Kessil! (I might've gone with two smaller units, but that's quibbling.)

Hypothetically, if you didn't mind it sticking up through the top a little, could you raise the kessil a few inches to try it out, or do the innards of the hood start blocking light?

(And I agree your tank and corals look great!!! This is just discussion. :) )
 
I know, I was thinking about building a brace to raise it up, I just like the neat look....i was thinking about a type of metal brace or something to hoist it up

I ordered an SB Reef unit and it should be here soon. The unit I ordered is 32" wide. My tank is 48" wide. (75 gal. 48"Wx18"Dx21"H) I believe the lenses are 120 deg. I'd like to just use the brackets that come with the unit so that it sits on top of the tank. I want to say the brackets give it a height above the surface of about 8 or 9 inches. My wife doesn't want me to hang it from the ceiling. Also, my tank has a glass lid. The tank also has one of those glass middle braces on the top.There are no corals in the tank except for a fdew mushrooms at this point, but I'd like to start adding more. Mostly softies and LPS to begin with. I'd like to add a clam later on.


That said, my questions are these:

A) Will a height of 8 inches give me enough coverage without dark spots at the edges of the tank?
B) Will the glass lid dampen the intensity to the point where I'll need to run my lights at a higher percentage?

The glass wont do much of any thing unless it gets as dirty as mine.

When you get the fixture play with it.
I reccomend a meter. It's a power full light.
I have the 16 in. I can still break the 50,000 lux mark at 12 in and I pulled most of the lenses

At 12 in you can easily get 100,000 lux at full tilt.
That's full daylight in Indonesia. Jus sayin.
