How high should my light be?

That looks so groovy! Even with the actinics being the only light source, it's sure is bright!

I think raising the fixture was a smart idea. Give the inhabitants some time to acclimate to the new light before you get super worried. Post your parameters as soon as you test please. Like the banded shrimp! Always wanted to have one and name it Ralph. [emoji6]

Parameters are
Salinity-1.024
Calcium-440
PH-8.2
Magnesium-1550
Alkalinity-12.8dkh

I don't have the same light but for my light I just held it up by hand to see what the spread looks like. Figure the height is just for spread unless your light isn't giving the power you want. Higher up seems like it can also mask the LED spotlighting (I know a previous light I had you could see the reflection of each LED on the waters surface plus particular colors were very prominent in the aquascape due to the fixtures height). After the visual part then I turned the LEDs up until I hit around 5,000+ lux and the sand.

The alkalinity is in the high side. And magnesium is on the upper crest as well. Are you using a particular salt mix? Are you dosing?

I'm using red sea coral pro salt and I accidently overdosed magnesium into my tank one night because I had a DIY drip system setup and it dumped a half Gallon of magnesium (Epson Salt) into my tank in a 6 hour period. Almost killed my entire tank. Plus I stupidly put not cycled dry rock (2 pounds) into my tank and it started the cycle over, which is why you don't see my frogspawn or GSP out right now. I hope they are not dead. It's been a bad month for me lol

[emoji52] I feel your pain. Have you prepped water for a change? I'd try to bring that alkalinity level under 10 soon. The magnesium will deplete on its own, and may have a benefit. I've seen high magnesium levels kill nuisance algae.

I've done 3 water changes since, a 7 gallon, a 6.5 gallon and a 3 gallon. First two were a day apart, the third was two days after .

Good luck on your build. My tank is just over 5 months old. I swear every livestock purchase is a new challenge in one way or another. But I'm about to upgrade to a 55 gallon. Just budgeting the pieces together.
My 10 gallon is 7 months old, I'd love to go bigger but it costs so much money . One day though, I think I'll go to a 20 or 30 gallon next that way I can keep the 2 10s and turn them into a double sump

Being honest, starting out small is the way to go. If you're successful at water parameters with such a small volume of water, when you go big, you end up going pro. [emoji1611]
