How important is ph in a reef tank

The guy I bought my Apex from suggested this as well.
And for those reading this, there is absolutely no reason for me to do this with the 7 pH calibration sample. 7 pH is 7pH at any temperature. I throw them both in to make sure I get the right one up to temp.

The 10pH sample would read 10.10 at 60F and 10.00 at 78F. Just to give people an idea of how temperature impacts pH.
 
I’ve never once tested mine in the three years my tank has been running. My buddy, who I bought the tank from, never checked it in the 10 years he owned it. So I’d have to say relatively unimportant!

pH is determined by the CO2 content of the water, and the carbonate alkalinity. Often, the CO2 level in the water is strongly impacted by the CO2 content in your home air. That varies tremendously. Homes with tighter sealing against air, and more CO2 sources (people, pets, gas stove, oven, etc.) will have much higher CO2.

pH is expected to have a substantial effect on the growth rate of hard corals. That growth rate matters more to some people than others. :)
 
how old is your pH probe? Is it the lab grade or regular version probe? It is possible it just needs to be replaced.

December 2017 - so not old at all. I'm using the probe the Apex shipped with which is the standard I believe. I just ordered some calibration packets that should get here today. I guess I'll know later depending on what time they arrive. I'm going to make sure they are similar temp by floating in the sump that was mentioned here for 15 minutes or so.
 
FWIW, getting a calibration buffer does not necessarily mean that buffer is actually at the pH claimed.

A number of years ago, I went out and bought a bunch of buffers from lfs and other places, and evaluated them.

I found that a pH meter properly calibrated with these commercial buffers could inaccurately measure normal seawater at pH 8.2 to be anywhere from pH 7.6 to 8.8, depending on which combination of inaccurate calibration buffers was actually used.
 
I just noticed the credit I gave to my 7 year old daughter helping me with those experiments. She is now a junior at Boston University. Time flies....

No insult taken! That was just my experience! I will add, however, I worked at Inland Aquatics and we had 35,000 gallons of saltwater. Never once did we test anything outside of salinity! Maybe the large body of water has an impact? Morgan always said our large turf scrubbers take care of everything!

I'm guessing your facility had plenty of air exchange, both into the tank and fresh air from outside. I feel the main reason hobbyists need to test pH regularly are due to changes in the CO2 content of our homes.
 
I usually do a quick test of ph with my red Sea kit every couple weeks to make sure my apex probe is close

You know what is funny? Ok, it isn't really because I should have thought of this...but since you mentioned red sea kit I looked over on my desk and there sat my kit. I have been using it over the past couple of months due to the new tank, cycle, etc. I never once looked to see if it did pH. I saw KH but for whatever reason never paid much attention... I will do that now sadly. Be back in a bit.

Again, learn something new today.
 
Red sea kit I have looks to be between 7.8 - 8.0 based on the color. Not a fan of these color matching deals but I know it isn't 7.6 which is good. Apex is reporting 7.59 has of the last 15 minute sample so there is a difference. I'll take the probe out, rinse and shake it a bit in ri/ro water, and then do a recalibrate and see if it changes at all.

Also this may or may not matter but I was looking at the fusion panel for the probe and noticed the advanced tab has a TC pull down. Not knowing what that is (still new to the latest Apex, my last unit was back in 2000 that had the X10's) I hit the ? for help - it pops up and said temperature control. If you have a temp probe connected, and I do, then enable this (mine was disabled) and it will compensate temperature for readings...recalibration required.

So maybe after I calibrate it I should enable this.
 
Yeah - after calibration a few odd things happened. I'm going to give it another go tomorrow. Apex pH is now reading 8.34 but oddly enough my Salinity probe was reading 33.8 and now after that it is reading 30.3. I'm guessing that needs to be calibrated. Double checked with my Milwaukee digital and it is reading 1.026 so I'll need to go convert that and see. I don't believe I have any packets of that left but did save the one the Apex shipped with. Not sure if that would still be good...

Anyway more reading, more double checking, sounds like the right thing to do before I go doing something silly.

I’ve read that algae turf scrubbers use environmental CO2, so meaning CO2 from the air, and not directly uptaking CO2 from the water passing over the algae. I’m assuming that large environment probably had direct access to fresh air, and thus air for gas exchange was lower CO2, as compared to houses that are sealed for months on end.
 
pH is important, but a wide range with reasonable swings can work in a reef tank. You may not get optimal growth, but I wouldn't expect any significant problems.
I use to be one of those PH chasers and one day someone said to me “their are more important things to worry about” so needless to say I really don’t bother much with the PH. Yes, I check it and if I find it’s a bit low I open the slider next to the tank, open up the cabinet abit and open the top up. Wa la problem solved naturally. Works every time

Meaning you still are a pH chaser, and are using one of the best methods. :)

Those probes are known to be sensitive to electrical interference - maybe while you were calibrating, the probe cord got moved near a power cable?

I did move some cables around I believe, yes. Nothing major but I did move some around a bit. I didn't know that, so thanks.
