What do everyone use to mount their sps frags. Do you take them off the frag plugs then glue them. I see all these full SPS tanks and surely those are not on frag plugs. Your help will be appreciated.

people do it differently. ive seen a lot of people who will use the frag rocks. basically a rock with a hole drilled in it and a recessed opening so the plug sits flush. then the coralline grows over it and you never see it. then you got people who mount them with putty, super glue or just stick the plug in the rock.

I personally am not a fan of frag plugs, some people like them so they can move their corals around if they're not responding well where they're at. Another thing I don't like is the stuff that can be on the frag plugs, bubble algae for example.

I always remove the frag from the plug. Even if it's encrusted I'll get as much of it off as I can and use IC gel glue to attach it. Doesn't hurt the coral and the frags grow right over it in time.

This is what I use: http://www.marinedepot.com/Bob_Smit...y_-Bob_Smith_Industries-YJ1111-FIMTEP-vi.html

Thanks I don't like frag plugs either. I don't have luck with super glue gel either. I want to mount them on the sides of rocks

I use Thrive frag plugs, they are dome shaped and textured so they look great and don't have the flat out of place look to them. Once they graduate from my frag rack I will dremel the bottom off and use D-D Epoxy.

Here's a photo I grabbed off of google showing what the Thrive frag plugs looks like.

No problem, the trick to glue is to put a little bit on your finger and rub it into the spot on the rock you want to mount the frag, then put the glue on the frag and attach it to the glue that's already on the rock. It'll bond much easier meaning less stress to the frag.

No need to take the rock out of the tank, I glue frags to the sides of rocks like this all the time, depending on the size of the frag sometimes you have to give it some support for a few minutes to let the glue cure a bit.

If more people used plugs like these I think I'd be a little less opposed to them. Good idea!

What's d-d epoxy

there's not much to superglue gel. you may have to hold it in place until it sets if its at an angle but other than that it should be a no brainer. I have frags glued everywhere. At this point I figure my tank is about 83% superglue gel

I usually cut the plug from the frag plug or let the frag completely encrust on my frag rack then cut the plug off and glue it to the rock work. Frags that don't encrust before being glued don't usually grow well for me. And after it encrusts you don't see the ceramic disk anyway.

The problem I had with using just super glue[gel] was I was trying to glue on top of other life on the rock. The glue was not fully attaching to the rock itself. I switched to rubbing a small piece of epoxy into the rock followed by glue on the frag to the epoxy.

what epoxy you use.

Supper glue gel and Milliput expox. I have recently built a barnicle shell tower to attach my SPS frags too using both but mainly Milliput.

I keep frags on my frag rack until they encrust approx 75% or of the plug. I then take the frag out of the tank, cut off the stem of the frag plug so it flush and I then use superglue/epoxy/superglue to mount the plugs.

Works without fail and the frag encrust over the plug in a matter of months and it's not visable.

That works great too. The only time{once} I did superglue/epoxy/superglue was when attaching to glass. It worked but wound up not liking very much.

I am one of the "don't like frag plugs" also.. Any frags i had gotten, I immediately took them off, with a much encrusted material as possible. I was only using water weld, until a friend showed me how to CA and water weld. It is working excellent on just about any angle i have tried. And the water weld, seems to get the fastest beginning encrusting..
