How has the economic slow-down effected your reef and reef-keeping? Tell us in this poll.

Looks like we voted in the same route. The economic slow down effects me because my job is government contract based and with fewer funds I have a shorter financial window. The biggest hurt to my funds may come after the election processes.

Anybody need GIS support locally?

Right now it isn't any different for me. But I do expect the summer slow down to come sooner. But it will give me an opportunity to restock and make new products and attack new markets. So even though the saltwater stuff may slow, my new projects should fill the void. I hope. The nice thing for me is the corals don't stop growing in the summer and it actually creates more true aquacultured corals since people are growing what they have and importing less. In turn buying more plugs and supplies.

right now its better for me because i just got into the workforce! lol i wonder how much better it would have been though

I'm glad to see so many people are doing well through this time. I heard on the news today that consumer confidence is at its' lowest since 1992.

Didn't see a chioce for things are well! The two most common things for people to spend extra cash on are vacation and home improvment. With fuel costs cancelling vacations people are deciding to hire a contractor. Many who would have rather gone somewhere for a week or so are now staying home and figuring that there vacation will be not doing home improvments themselves. I'm a painter and have more work than I can complete in a timely fashion for the first time in years!! Just finished up for a fixed income couple who decided that they would just park the 5th wheel on there property and hire us, will be the first time in a decade they didn't drive and camp at yellowstone for a week. Worked for two other people in the last month that figured hiring people to do what they would have done themselves will be this years vacation, both were much happier with what proffessionals did than they were capable of doing. I hope this trend is contagious and spreads like wilfire! Think about it, why go somewhere else for a week when you can support your local work force and beautify the place you spend fifty one weeks a year at!!!

I never thought about people doing more home improvement because of gas prices. That's awesome for you!

A lot of things slowed me down. I guess other than 4 boys that seems to want to eat three times a day, my wife went back to school. After she gets out in three years I will be back in full force with more money to spend. She does not know that yet so please do not tell her. She already told me that she is not going to school so we can buy more corals. That is the only reason I would go back to school, other than my kids.

i'm single and have a decent job, so i don't have the responsibilities of a family etc.

but as far as the aquarium goes, its not really affecting me. i've gotten to a point with my tank that i just can't add anything new, and i'm in a "grow out" phase which i've always wanted. it feels really gratifying to not have your hands in the tank every day fragging stuff and having to sell and make room for new stuff i want. i still do some buys and trades every now and then if i can get rid of some things and free up some room though, but thats more of an extreme situation.

but in general, the economic slow down and my busy job is probably subconciously affecting me in that i really am not needlessly buying random hot corals that look impressive. and i'm really striving to save the majority of my funds as much as possible. but honestly i think it has more to do with the unknown oil and gas situation more than the "economic slow down".

not knowing what the price of gasoline will be a year from now is very scary to me for some reason, even though i don't drive that much and i don't drive a gas guzzling car (but i don't exactly drive an efficient one either).

So far so good. I don't have to pay for gas for my job, fiance only has a 5 mile commute so gas not too much an issue there either. The rising cost of groceries and utilities sux though so some belt tightening might be coming soon enough.

The first 4 months of this year has been terrible. My father in law died on New Years Eve. Our half of the lawyer and funeral expense was 5,000. Which meant another loan on a streched budget. Income tax paid that back. Then our house payment went up 200 a month, Dang. Last Month we got the FIL insurance check It wasn't much but it paid off a credit card. When we get the tax incentive we will pay down another card. So we haven't had the money for squat for the tank this year so far. But come June my Hubby is DIYing me a frag tank and sump. By then we should be coming out of the slump, I will be looking for a nice zoa and paly frag pack to start my new system out on. Of course I will get them after the cycle for the new system

Hmmm..... I went and got a Master's degree in geology, almost a Ph.D., and now I have a ton of corals. Maybe they put something in the salt mix ;)

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Things have been tough for a lot of people I know. My cousin owned an LFS that had to close. Hopefully things turn around soon.

Slamming me into the ground is an understatement...

Things were looking up for a while, but now its a downward spiral.

Had to put the fish room on hold AGAIN...

Then wouldnt you know it, hardware starts failing...

Now Im going to have to pick up a second job just to get by...

My wife likely wont be going back to work after out second child is born in a couple weeks...even if she does, shell be off for about 3 months...

But hey atleast gas is cheap...:horse:

Things have def slowed but it just means me and my business partner have to be smarter about our buy's and actualy it has brought some vendors together and doing buy's together and sharing the cost so we still get what we want without shelling out the big bucks as one would have to and I hope this can continue even after things get better.I see things making a big turn around soon and with gas prices being high and people staying home I honestly think sales this summer may be better then your avearge summer do to people staying home.

At least we are not dieing of some terrible disease. We lost my MIL to breast cancer a year and a half ago. Since I am disabled I had to take care of her while my wife worked. Believe me, we are lucky to just be alive. There is nothing as painful as dieing of the big C. Morphine would not touch her pain.

your right I lost my mother 2 years ago to cancer she was lucky as heres was in her liver so it wasnt as painful as most cancers and after finaly coming to terms with it a friend of mine has it at the age of 32 but his prognosiss is hopeful so we should all be happy with our health and not be to worried about the almighty dollar thanks for bringin things into prospective.

I had an aunt that died with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). She couldn't even be in a bed it was so bad. She spent the last months of her life in a recliner because that's the only way she could even begin to feel ok. It's such a slow and terrible process. I lost my mother in 2001 when I was 20. Sudden heart attack. You never know when life will throw you a curve ball.

Despite wanting to cut back on going out, we haven't. Spending on the tanks never ends (if I run ou tof room, I set up a new tank...). Business is really down right now. We've had some rough times since around July of last year (no new houses, fewer new water heaters needed...). My position is the most recently created, but one that was long over due. All the other engineers are busy with projects, so I have some job security for now. If the projects get cancelled and we have too many geeks running around, they may have to lose one or two... That won't be good.
