How long before dry rock turns into live rock?

Attached is a pic of my tank with all white light on. My lfs told me that this green will go purple? About how long before that is?

I'm almost 2 years with minimal pink coralline algae! So far, none on the rocks, just a few spots on the overflow and powerheads. I have finally started to get some dark red coralline on a few rocks.

The green you see is the initial algae growth after turning on the lights following the cycle.

As mentioned before, if you started with dry rock you need to introduce some source of coraline, a piece of live rock with coraline may be used.

About a year. It will need to go through the algae cycles.

Thing to realize about live rock is that it is a process. There’s not really a definitive point where it goes from dead to alive. Beyond the first bits of bacteria that are introduced. More of what it is capable of processing. As time goes on, it will mature more and more. Beyond just having enough nitrifying bacteria to harbor fish. Over the years it will diversify As new things are added

Here’s a snapshot of a piece of my rock. This piece started as a dry piece of aquamaxx base rock from marine depot about 5 years ago. Totally clean, sterile, bleach white. Not even any dust on it. Almost like a manufactured product.

It may grow other types of algae before then. Keep your parameters consistent and introduce some coralline. It will find its way in there on frags, but you can get some scrapings from another tank to help it along... the stuff is almost a plague when it gets established and you could get scrapings for free form others.

I started off with stark white dry rock, and it was fully purple by a year. It was growing a couple months in, but it really builds up steam as time goes on and covers stuff fast.
