10 days ago I added 4 new fish. A yellow eyed kole tang, 2 long nose hawks, a melanarus wrasse, and a pearly jawfish. I acclimated for almost 2 hours and added the fish. The melanarus immediately buried himself in the rear of my tank and I have not seen him since. The jawfish dug a hole and he has not come out since. However a can see the jawfish in his hole. My previous experience with jawfish was he was one of the boldest personalities in my tank. Always out and up front. Anyway, how long before you would write off the wrasse as doa?

Did you quarantine or were these dropped straight in from the LFS?

A couple years, I’ve seen once a wrass that lived for a few months maybe year on a bag of live sand.

Give the wrasse a week or so. Jaw should come out to eat. Try spot feeding in front of it.

Wrasse should have come out by now but may be hiding for other reasons. Have you tried pods or Cyclopeeze or Calanus? Wrasse go crazy for those, may get him out of hiding.

I feed live blackworms and frozen mysis. Blackworms are usually a big deal. Everyone seems to love them. I’ll try feeding directly over the jawfish den. I really hope he comes out. I had my last one for years and he was a favorite.

It’s really variable, depending upon the fish itself and tank mates. All things equal, the longer a fish goes absent the poorer the prognosis; but I’ve had sand burying wrasses go a couple of weeks before reappearing.
