The filter on my 75 gallon tank stopped working. How long can it go like this without die off.

if your tank has live rocks, your tank should be fine. Limit your feedings until you can get your filter back up and running.

Do you have powerheads/wavemakers
My question exactly, just to add, if the tank has only the broken filter for flow, that is going to be your biggest issue

What kind of filtration do you have? What, exactly, stopped running?

Also, what kind of livestock do you have? Corals? Fish? Both?

The main and most important filtration is the biofilter which happens in the rock with flow. As long as you have rock and powerheads in the tank, ammonia will be converted into nitrate.

Other filter machines that you add to your tank remove debris and dissolved organics (doc's) from the water. These are mechanical and chemical filters, but the tank can run without them. Water changes can replace these filters and will remove debris and doc's from the water.

One of my tanks has run for years with only rocks and flow and weekly water changes, thats it, no other type of filtration.
