Today I bought a purple star polyp soft coral. It’s been in the tank for about 4 hours now and I’m wondering how long it will take to completely open up.

may take up tp 2 days, otherwise less depending on lighting and water conditions,

Anywhere from immediate to 48 hours. They respond best in anarea of moderate water flow and salinity of 1.025 range

It may be in full bloom tomorrow morning or stay closed for a few days. Give it a bit before worrying.

Usually within a few days, but I've seen it take a few weeks once. They're extremely hardy coral so don't worry too much.

Star polyps are one of the most hardy of soft coral you can get. Give it about 2-3 days and they should start to open up.
Unless I get a hold of them then they die. Tried twice and they just wither away. LPS, leathers and sinularia all grow good tho so I don't get it but I can't grow zoas either.

Is it normal if it opens and then closes back up within a few hours?

Dont worry, they will open and close on and off while they are acclimating. As long as your have halfway decent water and basically any light at all they will be fine. You could grow star polyps in a toilet bowl with table salt. Very hardy and even more difficult to kill.
