How long till a tank is safe to operate? Lets say Petcos regular aquariums and Redsea Reefers?

Depending on the circumstances, a long time. Things like misuse, moving multiple times, sitting dry, or worse yet, dry in the sun, can all have factors.
The main difference between sometbsom like a Petco tank and a Red Sea is fit and finish. A RS tank will have cleaner silicone joints, low iron glass, beveled edges etc.

This is quiet a good question. I have the Red Sea Max S 650 and I was thinking the same.

Assuming they are looked after, are they good for 10,15, 20 years I have no clue as I’ve never owned one that long ?

Ive got a 150 gallon i bought used that had sat in some guys basement for an untold number of years. It had belonged to the sellers grandfather and included some sort of archaic undergravel filter setup that was impossible to find the like of on the web. Extra thick glass, faded plastic fake wood trim, various small chips and nicks to the edges and no center bracing on it. If i had to guess I'd say the tank is from the 80s. I never resealed it and its been holding water for months now.

I have had my 120 (48x24x24) Oceanic setup since 2001. Hopefully they last longer than 17 years. ;)

The first tank that i still have is an Oceanic 58. It sat outside some guys house for a couple of years.Traded him a 12 pack of Sam Adams and brought it home.resealed it and good to go.

I had a 10 gallon Odell for over 20 years .got it when I was a kid. Moved it 6 times and finally dropped it. I swear I'd still be using it for something if I hadn't.
