Hello everyone! My question is more or less of a poll for how many algae scrubbers you think are sold per year? I'm working on a product and am interested in how large the market is, any help would be awesome...thanks!

I have no idea how many are sold a year, but here’s my .02

IMO algae scrubbers are extremely over priced. I took a fiberglass screen, connected it to a pole, then put a 5 dollar CFL bulb on it and it grew GHA like crazy. If i were ever going to consider a scrubber, they’d have to be much larger than what’s available for a fraction of the cost.[/QUOTE]

I built my own scrubber as well however in doing so I have recreated the wheel and am patenting a product that I truly believe will take over the scrubber at a far better value which is what brings me here to find out how large the market is :)

Well if you need a beta tester.. I’ll be here haha

Your .02 cents is worth much more than that to me I'll be sure to enlighten you on the design within the next week or so (once its patent is finished) and I would absolutely be up for something like that

I’m in limbo between houses but over the next year I’ll be making a 700 total gallon system so I’ll definitely be in need of one

I'll be interested in your design having also built my own scrubber which has some significant differences to whats available on the market at present (they are all a direct copy of SantaMonica's 2007 downflow design.

I have seriously considered patenting the design & manufacturing it, or perhaps selling the design to an established manufacture?

Good luck!

I believe you were asking if I was patenting the design if so the answer is hell yes its getting patented and should have a patent on it soon at which time I can start introducing my intellectual love child to the community

No way to really know the addressable market. Sellers of ATS might have a sense, but they aren’t likely to tell you LOL. There was a thread a while back about the number of reef tanks in the US alone. It’s six pages essentially of guesses. I think you’ll end up with the Drake Equation for ATS (that made me laugh - who knows what that is?). Somewhere between one (us) and a million. Does that help? Also keep in mind that the reef hobby is a graveyard for ‘great’ ideas.

I asked everyone even brs about 2 or 3 weeks ago (figured it wasnt likely) ...my presence on this thread tells the rest lol

Anything that will fit in a red sea Max nano? Nobody has one that will work without taking a big chunk of my display and causing issues with flow.

I was thinking of the drop .2 or hog .5? from santa Monica but can't pull the trigger as they say I need 2 drop .2 and the hog .5 is relatively large for the space

My design is heavily geared towards the nano reefers

So nothing for us big tankers?

Would you say your design is more efficient at growing, easier to maintain, or how exactly os it better than what we see now?

I would be interested if it's something that works and is convenient

This is just me ,, not trying to upset you here :) I would think long and hard about investing your time and money into this ,, BRS sells them ,, there are others on the market ,, I have one of the others ,, a good one ,, sitting in my closet collecting dust ,, Reefers can build them at home ,,, I bought a Pax Bellum ,, Reef Octopus has a Chatto Reactor on the market ,, they are easy ,, build a manifold system off your return pump ,, one hose into the chatto reactor ,, one hose out of it ,, put the light on a timer ,,, done ,, no algae screens to clean ,, you don't have to do a lot of re plumbing ,, takes up a lot less space ,, pull the Chatto Reactor every so often ,, pull the Chatto ,, done ,, Algae Scrubbers take up space ,, lots of it compared to a Chatto Reactor ,, space most reefers don't have in their systems ,, you are not only going to have to compete with other Algae Scrubbers ,, you are going to have to compete with these no fuss no muss Chatto Reactors hitting the market ,,

I 100% agree right now I'm using an algae scrubber that I made for like 78$ (70$ on the innovative marine led 8$ for the actual scrubber) the competition tells me there is a market for this and once you see mine I think you will understand why I'm not nervous about that at all

It's hard for me to say anything without saying too much however I will say its......revolutionary I'm a firm believer that the scrubbers out right now are money grabbers for people who cant or just don't want to diy ...mine would be nearly impossible to diy and if I were to charge what these brands charge for their scrubbers I think most people would consider that a fair price

I'm interested because 1. There is no way to plumb a refugium or chaeto reactor on my nano. 2. Santa Monica is the only one that offers something that might fit and they appear basically home made and I'd prefer to keep more wires out of my tank. 3. Try as I might with removing rock and scrubbing, my GHA won't go away and is spreading, I feed small amounts several times a week. It came around after I moved to another state and went bare bottom, no GHA before the move.

I think you will enjoy what I'm working on I've had many nano tanks over the years and I know what a struggle it is to get your filtration needs packed into small enough packages to fit your tank ....as for the gha when you moved the tank is the tank now near a window that could be encouraging algae growth?

Nope, it's now not by a window at all. Before it was right next to one that I left partially open year round for co2 issues. Only difference is I removed the 1.5-2" sandbed
