So I think I've decided to go with all T5 lighting over my 90 mixed reef. I'm trying to decide how many bulbs and what colors I'll need. I plan to keep Zoas, LPS, some softies, and maybe a few SPS. I'm looking at either a complete fixture or retrofit. TIA

What kind of 90g tank? Standard or custom?

If it is a 48x18x24 you have a few options.

If you want full coverage and 0 shadowing when things grow out, go with a 48" fixture. 6 or 8 bulb will work on the tank, 8 bulb for sure if you want to ever get into SPS hard core. Most 8 bulb fixtures are about 47" x 17", so it will cover the entire tank with light.

If you know you are going to stick with a generally mixed reef tank, you could do a 36" fixture. You would just need to account for lower par on the sides of the tank if your rock work extends to the ends of the tank. Really it is more to "Is anything going to be in the way to block the light?"

I prefer to go to the next step up of what I think I will need with lights, as they can always be dimmed (if you go that route with a dimmable fixture), or raised up if needed. It also allows for growth if you decided to get a bigger tank down the road. Use the old light till you have saved up enough for a longer light for example.

As for bulbs, it gets to be more of a preference thing for looks. Myself, I prefer more white and less blue for mixed tanks. I am not trying to make zoas pop like crazy. I want to see the hues in the SPS that are natural. But that is me. For an idea of what bulbs to use to get the look you want, the link and snip below will help with that. And note: you do not have to use ATI, this is just a good reference for color of bulbs and how they mix.

Once you decide on a fixture, click the links for the best bulb combo for that bulb amount fixture. It will tell you the mix to get the color you want.

Thanks for the info. I'm just getting in after a 12 year absence. Ran VHO back then with a mixed reef....grew pretty much everything that I wanted at least.

I ran a 6 bulb Tek way back in the day over my old 90, I don't remember the bulb / color combo - I loved that fixture, too bad they're not made anymore. But anyway - I was growing SPS corals all over, couldn't keep low light corals at all.

I've run 75 and 90 gallon tanks on multiple occasions and found the height of the tank is the deal breaker. On my 75's I could get away with 4 bulbs and still had a wide variety of corals, SPS included. 6 bulb for the 90 - if you wanted to keep all SPS corals only - then maybe an 8 bulb.

Just my opinion.

Grwat choice!

I run a 6x 39" ATI powermodule (hybrid) over a 48x21.5x23.5 tank myself. I like its coverage and i can place all types of corals since i do have lower par on the sides (150-200 range).

However, if you want SPS from side to side, then i would def go with a 48" module, either 6 or 8 would work just fine.

Thoughts on lighting schedule If I do the 6 bulbs?
Thanks again

This is an excellent quality fixture at the best price around. Has individual reflectors for each bulb which is key. Costs a fraction of what the poor quality reef hobby fixtures do. Available in either 6 or 8 bulb configuration. Bulb wise I'd go 4x ATI Blue Plus 2x ATI Coral Plus, 1x ATI Pink, 1x Geisseman Pure Actinic or similar pure actinic bulb to get some nice fluorescence.

Anyone else have any experience with this light?

I have a 90 as well. Started only LED,switched to only T5’s, game changer when I removed 2 T5’s and replaced with 1 48” Reefbrite XHO. I now run 4 t5’s And the XHO, 3 purple plus ATI and one Coral plus ati. Adding the XHO was the best decision I’ve made for lighting, highly suggested. I have a true complete mixed reef and everyone’s happy inside. Nothing wrong with running only T5’s either.

I meant to add that I use Coral Life dual 48” ballast plugged into outlet timer/surge protector.

Colors look great!

Maybe a dumb question, but what is the reefbright xho?

Not a dumb question in the least, my apologies for assuming's more like it. Here's a link. These are not cheap, thats why I went with Coralife for the T5's. Do note that Coralife has low power and high power ballast, you want high power for t5's.

And a BRS link, Again I just run one 48" in between the two Coralife units.

I also just ordered an ATI hybrid for my new 30g, as other mentioned, ATI's are nice options as well.
