How many crabs

15-20 would be a good start. I prefer blue leg hermits. Not just crabs though. Add a good mix of snails as well. Trochus, Astrea, Turbo, Cerith and a few Nassarius. A couple emerald crabs for bubble algae.

Wow, I didn't expect there to be so many.
new hobbyis often thinks that the clean up crew is really great and will do a huge job eating algae and cleaning the tank. It doesn’t really work that way. They help to control algae only. You need quite a lot of them to make A real difference and you will still need to help them with regular maintenance Of your own.

Sadly you'll struggle to get the range of clean up crew in NZ that many other countries do.
If you can find a local hobbiest you might be able to get some snails cheaply. But snails from stores are unfortunately are a little pricey because of the import and quarantine procedures they have to go through.

Edit:
Tropical hermit crabs almost never get imported now but you can occasionally get them from people shutting down

I'd get 0, lil jerks go after my soft coral when theres nothing left for them to eat or boredom maybe. Plus they'll murder a snail just to see if they'll fit in its shell, if not, dead Snell and empty shell. Not a single crab is going into my new tank!!!

agree 1000%. Before they eat any algae, they will munch on corals (I watched one take several clawfulls of my acan), snails, each other, feather dusters, uneaten food, etc... basically anything besides algae.
