How many fish generally can I put into my 120? I have 7 now but only 1 that I would consider a large fish (naso tang). I have 2 oscillarus clowns, a lawnmower blenny, coral beauty, bullet goby, and a pesky 4 stripe damsel that gone when I can catch him. Wanting to get one more tang and possibly some type of schooling fish. I prefer easy to moderate care levels. Any thoughts?

There are a lot of other things to consider. How much room its in the tank? What do you have for filtration? What else is in the tank? Coral grows and so do fish especially tangs. Be careful about adding another Tang with the naso already there. When adding multiple tangs it is best to do it all at the same time. naso tangs can be super aggressive towards other tangs.
There isn't a rightb answer to your question but we can help if you give more details about the tank.

When I had my 120 I had 10 fish in it and 3 of them were tangs ( Blonde Naso, yellow, and powder brown) They all got along great and the Naso was the first one in. With that I may have gotten lucky. But I think you would be fine with another tang I would just go with a smaller one that you like. Good luck

if you're set on another tang consider a scopas tang. They are a different body shape than a naso which might help a bit with potential aggression.

Are you referring to Naso lituratus/elegans ? If so, I wouldn't put one in a 120, would be better suited for an 8 foot tank.

the rule of thumb is 1 fish for every ten gallons but also take into consideration your invertabrates and corals. 10 fish for a 120 should be max

The problem with "1 fish for every ten gallons" is that it doesn't take into account the size and shape of the fish. A Naso vlamingii is just one fish, but it wouldn't even fit into a 55 gallon tank -- granted that is an extreme example, but still gets the point across.

"1 fish for 10 gallons"... YAY 12 tangs in a 125 gallon... j/k

I have a heavy bio load in my tank, but it is a few tangs and more smaller stuff. Probably a little more than I should have at this point, but it is healthy and nutrients are being handled so it's all good.

Now I'm a bit worried. I have a medium sized Naso in my tank. The guy at the shop said 120 was sufficient for him.

considering that they grow nearly half the length of your tank I would say it is a tad to large for you 120

Anyone interested in a trade? The fish store said I had a few years before I had to worry.

A naso tang is going to grow into a large fish. it may be alright for now but eventually it will need a larger tank. You could do a couple or even 3 tangs in a 120 but not the long body ones like naso or vlamingi etc.

So should I go ahead and try to catch him and trade for something else?

I would have to say that the key to answering this question would be space (available swimming room) and nutrient export. I like a heavy bio load but take care of the nutrient export through an oversized skimmer and biweekly WCs.

I was hoping a sailfin would work
