How many have "storm or cloudy" days in your reef?

I'm just wondering who has a set schedule of tuning off their lights to mimic a storm or cloudy day just like in the ocean? I'm currently battling some cyano and I tried not having a photoperiod for a day. Seemed to have helped but what I noticed is my BTA's seem to perk up more after. Maybe I'm just imagining it but I've read the same experience from others after a lights out period in their reefs. Might include a storm/cloud day to my routine.

I've heard of people doing it to the extent that the black out the tank of even ambient light. I've never tried it myself but I've always wanted to. I figure the power goes out enough at the house that it takes care of me doing it manually.

Maybe when I get LEDs I can do that, but with the current setup I don't have that ability...

When I know that I won't be home for a photoperiod, I think I might as well have no photoperiod. It's weird coz my clowns seems rejuvinated and the BTA's bubbles look bigger. I have a small amount of indirect light penetrating the basement so it's not totally dark. The clowns do stay in their nems though and don't venture out while the sun is out. Gives them a break from their hectic schedule of being fed 2-3x/day.

Ive turned my lights off for a couple of days when adding a new tang, have also done it during a cyano break out and seemed to help..Only other time lights are off out of the norm are when i lose power

I've never tried it, but I know I get burned out here because we have month after month of sunny days. It's so monotonous that any change is welcome. (Yes, I know I just complained about nice weather :wink

About every 2 months I remove one of my powerheads and move it around blasting everything. It makes a mess and the next day I have to use my turkey baster to blast away all the sediment that settles on everything. I think everything looks better than ever by day 3.

great idea.. another one I've heard is stirring up the sump area every so often when doing water changes. I bet that'll make the tank look like a storm just passed. LoL. been meaning to have a powerhead set up in the sump area under the stand I build for the skimmer.
