How many maxspect gyres for 180g?

I would actually look into something else. I was running 2 250's on my 7' shallow tank, and very unhappy with them. No random flow, it seemed to just go one direction. I am now running one of the 250's with 1 tunze 6105, and have much more flow. I have another 6105 I plan to start up soon. When I get it dialed in I think it will be much better. I may get rid of the gyre all together before its over, and get something else for that end. My tank is a peninsula

On a system that large you'll want at least 2 pumps in case one fails so you have some level of flow beyond what the return provides. I also agree with JOKER that it's probably best to mix and match your pumps. I have two Tunze Stream 3's on my 220 and am adding a Gyre XF230 right after Christmas.

I run 1x150, 1x250 and upgraded controller at 70% max random (one in each side), 2x jebao wp-25 on back at S1-Else on my 80 gallon shallow..

I run two gyre xf250's on my 180. They alternate every couple minutes so the flow isn't the same all the time. Also, if your worried about the flow not being random enough, there is a random setting on the gyres that all you do is set the max flow intensity.

I have a xf150 and xf250 on my 180. I control the with icecaps and have them setup based on BRS' setup.

Just the mode called alternating, it has arrows going in a circle. The pumps blow forward then reverse, even though the reverse doesn't do much, I notice it blows off anything stuck on the blades. One pump runs forward for two mins and then the other one does.

2 of the XF250's will run your tank easily. I dont know what people are talking about not having random flow. Yes if you leave them on constant the flow becomes a bit linear. If you alternate gyre them every 45 seconds the flow will be random.

On a very similar sized tank, we just switched over to two gyres with a program designed not for "random flow" but alternating "currents" followed by shifting "turbulence." I have to say I think it worked out better than I could have hoped. Not only do I like the flow better than the controllable tunzes we were using but it looks much better in the tank as well.
It's at about 8 minutes 20 seconds in.
I do something similar - without an Apex - with the two x-50 Gyres in my 220. They're set to ramp up to 70%, and then back down over the course of three or five minutes, then ramp to 100% in reverse. Each pump's timing is set a little bit off from the others, so there are times when the two currents are crashing and battling across the water's surface, and other times when both pumps are in "reverse" mode, and the water is relatively still. (All the while, the return is still pushing a lot of flow as well - it's a Fluval SEA SP6.
The sand does get pushed away from the front/center of my tank, and from both ends, to a lesser extent - I could probably knock the forward flow back to 60% or so. When both pumps are in forward mode, it can pull bubbles from the surface in vortices that dance across the center third of the tank - and if a vortex dances in front of the left (they never dance in front of the right one for some reason) return, the bottom of the vortex gets sheared away in a crashing cloud of silver bubbles. (That happens a few times a day or so.)
You could use either the 230s or the 250s - the larger pumps would offer a "power cushion" - a reserve in case your SPS grow long and dense . . .

I use 2 of the xf250s on my 6' long 220. One horizontally on each end. Pretty happy with the flow and it has been working well however as it becomes more sps dominant I am looking to add more flow to the tank and will probably add a Mp40 to the back wall for that (since I own it and you cant and more than 2 gyres per controller either)

Ryan! I really like what you did with the BRS160! Now, I love blasting my corals and fish with flow. I'm about to place an order for two Gyre's so I can mimic your setup. My question is, I have the Apex classic, do i just need to buy the pumps? What do I need to have my Apex control these Gyre's?

I used pretty much every combination of pumps imaginable on my old 180g from jebao to tunze to ecotech. I ended up with two xf250 as the best of them all. I use nothing but gyres on my frag tanks now too.

Thanks for the added feedback. I’m shooting for two x XF250’s for my 120 reef. Maybe a little overkill but I won’t be running them at full capacity at first. Also, I read that by not running them at full capacity they’re a lot quieter. Thanks!
