How many Micron Filter Sock do you run?

By default what came with my sump was 200 micron socks, which I have been using for some time with no issues other then clogging a bit faster then I want. Recently I have been looking at new filter sock options and think of possibly going higher micron, I have 2 stages so I could put some 400's in front of my 200s, or even move to 400 and prefilter with some 600 or 800 microns.

What micron filter sock do you use and why?

I was running a 200. but I just ditched my socks all together. I run 3 bio bricks and my skimmer along with some rubble. no other filtration.

What micron filter sock do you use and why?

I've been experimenting with different micron sizes with both mesh and felt filter socks. 200 micron felt filter socks keep the water crystal clear. However, they remove everything from the water column and I need to change them every 2-3 days. For the past few weeks I've been using 300 micron mesh socks and they do not catch much of anything. I could probably leave it in for 2 weeks and it still would not clog. In fact, I seem to have to clean more off the outside of the sock due to algae growth from the refugium. So basically 200 micron felt catches too much. 300 micron mesh doesn't catch enough.

My Idea is to use a mesh filter sock during the week and swap it out for a felt sock for the weekend. I have some 100 and 150 micron mesh filter socks coming in that I am going to test.

I use a 100 mesh for the first sock and a 200 felt on my 2nd sock. I do a quick rinse on the 100 mesh every couple of days and rinse the 200 felt once a week. Seems to work very well for me.

Surprising to me that anything larger then 200 micron isn't getting clogged up. I wonder if there is some specific biological reason for this we dont know.

Does anyone know if they are using Nylon or other materials? Some shops let you pick between Nylon and Polypropylene.

I use filter floss instead.

Clogging slower is not necessarily a good thing. The longer it stay in, the more time for the detritus to break down into nitrate and phosphate.

I use 200 micron felt socks. But to be honest, I just rely on the socks to catch the bigger particulate matter. The skimmer and fuge take care of the rest. I've got socks that I've been reusing for a couple of years. Pretty sure they're not 200 microns anymore. I change the socks every three days, and they catch quite a bit.

No sox unless using lanthanum.
