A mechanical filter along with live rock, skimmer and power heads..... Debating on taking my filter off the tank now that it has cleared up the sand storm. Just want to see what everyone else is doing!

I do, have on all my tanks throughout the years. I run a Magnum H.O.B canister now on my 46 reef, mostly so I can run carbon but also for the mechanical filtration aspect

Mechanical filters are okay if you keep them cleaned. If you don't they can become nitrate factories. I only put floss in mine when i blow off rocks when i do water changes and the i remove floss the next day. After that i will use carbon or phosphate media only.

I have a two chamber penguin. I'm debating on keeping the carbon inserts in or taking them out and filling the chambers with live rocks. I'm torn. For now I think I'll keep the inserts in and just change them monthly.

I run nothing but Macro Algae, few different types.

Carbon is great at keeping tank clear and absorbing lots of bad stuff. Its the pads or floss that accululate debris and cause nitrates. If you have enough live rock in your tank you should not have to add it to your mechanical filter.

So, right now i have around 20 pounds of live rock in the tank, i feel as long as i change the filter pads monthly i should be fine, agreed?

Purigen as a filter media can be used to keep some of the nitrates down. It doesn't help with existing nitrates, though.

I'm not using it for that, more to just polish the water.
