I have a Red Sea 525XL. Tank is 5’ long and the display is 107 gallons. Rock work is pretty minimal in my tank, a couple great hidings spots though!

I’m a huge fan of keeping multiple Zebrasoma together when possible/responsible. How many is too many for a tank this size? Personally it feels like 2 is about right and 3 might be pushing the boundaries of this tank. Certainly no more than 3.

Then I begin questioning myself as I’ll be browsing the forums and see people with the same tank and tons of tangs.

What are your thoughts?

I have an old school 125 with six tangs (two yellow, scopas, tomini, kole, clown) and a foxface. They all get along fine, but I have a lot of rock and feed heavily. Will probably have to rehome the clown tang soon though.

I have a 4 foot 120 gallon and I always keep at least 3 and usually 4. For a brief moment I kept 5. Yellow, Blue, Sailfin, Kole, Naso. Of course none of them were bigger than 4-5 inches and I had to rehome the sailfin fairly quickly.

with the right rock work the fighting is not an issue with keeping multiples but rather getting them enough food and then processing the waste is the main issue.

At what size do you begin considering a re-home in a tank our size?

Probably 5” but you can also tell by fishes behavior

When the normal amount of food i provide is no longer enough to keep them fat and happy. I know the amount of food my tank can process without any nuisance algae outbreaks so I try to stick to that.

I primarily only feed Mysis and PE Mysis as I have a tank full of rock so there is plenty of algae for the tangs. If I have to start supplementing their feedings with seaweed/nori to keep weight on them then it’s time to go.

I don’t have any nuisance algae, as the tangs obliterate any vegetation whatsoever. I put in a sheet of nori on a lettuce clip, and it is gone in less than 30 minutes
