How much do you spend a week for this hobby.

Hey guys I had a question because this hobby is taking a toll in my pockets. for example today I was going to pickup a egg crate from my lfs for free and I ended buying 4 frags of corals. My normal amount I spend is around 60 dollars a week. I think this going to keep going on until make tank is filled with corals lol.

When I make good tips from work ill spend every penny on my tanks. I pick up supplies, food, fish, corals, anything tank related that I "think" I need! LOL

But I would say $20-50 depending on what I want/need.

It depends. When I sell some frags it's like play money and I put it right back into the tank.

+1 man. When you sell frags you tell yourself that you're making money and it's paying itself off, but then you just go right back and spending 2x what you made and not even taking into account of how much you spent in the first place before you FS threads, LOL!

If you are like me, you will keep going until your tank is full. Then you will buy a bigger tank. Repeat step A and B, over and over...

I made my confession about being a reefing addict in my introduction :D

It would be easier put in monthly terms as I have to order online a lot of times. But I would say somewhere around 10-15 most weeks, but my tank is pretty full so it's about time for a bigger tank.

Not trying to be negative, but as with any hobby, it can become an addiction. When I started my tank, I knew the look I was going for and what animals to keep. That way, I kept always trying to get the corals to fill in the tank so I could just cruise doing maintenance, and enjoying it. There is where I am now, I had patience to wait and only buy corals I really looked for and were to my standards. If you get impulsive with buying corals that you like, you will be spending money every time you go to the store. Also I aimed to grab the best equip I could for the tank. Good skimmer, lights and pumps are a must. If you are not happy with those, you will buy a diff system everytime they come out with a newer version. Some corals are very addicting....chalices, scolys, zoas, sps...we gotta be very careful to know when is the time to stop and be happy with what you have. I spend 50 if that every two weeks now only buying salt, frozen foods, filter socks...

Right now, too much! And I have more to do before I can cut back the spending.

My intention is to get my tanks and system to where it is a daily procedural process, then work to refine that process down to a pure step by step so someone can come in and tend the system when I am gone. At that point I intend to only be purchasing supplies with an additional expense for a life form as a special treat on occasion. I have (private) clear cut goals to achieve. I think it is the goals, even if they are loosely formed, which keep a hobby in perspective. We need to define the reasons for hobbies and keep them within those constraints. This is how we gain more depth to our person and true value to our hobbies. I need the quality time with my tanks but I refuse to develop them into something which constrains me from other joys of living.

My goal in reefing is for it to become a vehicle for quiet time with deep slow paced processes to do at the start and at the end of each day for peace of mind and mental health. In the AM that happens to be while making a good pot of coffee. In the evening it is a time to slow down and relate to life forms in the tanks at their pace as I strive to provide them a healthy eco system to live in, thus gifting me back a deep inner piece as I wrap up my day.

For me there are other things to be balanced in, IE: family time, and my paint balling habit which, with going to the gym, keeps an old fart like me in shape. I have let my time on the paint ball field and at the gym slip and my physical condition shows it. Being semi-retired all these things (including my reef tank) have a purpose in my life. That purpose is hopefully in keeping me occupied and more healthy physically and mentally as I age.

(LOL, Also, I want to get back into remote control WW II war planes now that we can have live cameras in the cockpits so we can fly them with live as if in the seat views.)
