Hey guys! I’m just curious about fish prices elsewhere in the world. I live in NZ where all livestock must go through a mandatory 4 (or maybe it is 3 I’m unsure) quarantine period. If any signs of certain pests the specimen is “destroyed”.

Because of this if I wanted a small/baby blue tang, the cost is $180NZD= $120 USD.

I am not sure if that is reasonable for New Zealand, but in the U.S $120 for a 2-3" blue tang would be considered high. Also I have never trusted a stores QT process, however, the LFS you have might be significantly better.

Seems steep to me unless it's captive bred or just a huge fish. Small ones run about $50-$60USD and it goes up from there. A few average prices here:

Keep in mind these are all size small prices and wild caught:

One Spot Foxface $40-$45
Occ Clownfish (regular, not designer) $15-$25
Melanurus Wrasse $30-$35
Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel $25-$35
Pajama Cardinalfish $15-$20
Leopard Wrasse $30-$35
Yellow Tang $35-$50 (depends on bulk orders/sales)
Blue Tang $50-$60

I got my Hippo Tang for around forty dollars a while back, it was only about a quarter size.

It’s 1-3 inches for that price. Yeah this is the national price minimum haha, some individual stores charge more.

The quarantine is unreliable sadly because some of the LFS have ich or parasites in their own tanks so even though most fish come out of NZ customs “clean” as they are prophylactically treated, they often get infected going back into the shop. We have some online ordering direct from the importer starting up now so that maybe the way to go.

Thank you for all your replies this is really interesting. I suppose our country being isolated plus extra transport costs will also factor into this.
