I am rebuilding my 55 gallon Mostly FowLR tank. Mostly because in the future I plan to have a BTA and Green Star polyp, other than that, fish, fish and more fish. Some of which will have large fins like dwarf lionfish and marine bettas.

I have a Hydor Koralia 850 gp/h powerhead, but am somewhat concerned 850gp/h is a bit much for 55 gallons.

I think you will be fine, I have about 1500 gph from my Nero powerhead for my 75 gallon tank and everything is doing great

I think you should cross that bridge when you come to it. In the meantime, I would watch some videos on reef flow, particularly videos of happy bubble tips. A 850 can either be too little, just right, or too much depending on the return flow, aquascape, etc.

Listen to the fish, coral and substrate. I have learned they dictate what works and what doesn’t.

In my situation, I have over 3,100 gph in my 75g (4 ft long) and it is mixed reef. I have an anemone, lps, softies, and sps in there. Now, I'm thinking to increase even more flow lol.

I would check on your livestock to see how they react to the flow.

You can always play with the flow exit to make it reflect off the glass and reduce current , I also move new corals around so they adjust as some like more flow than others. I have extreme flow in my tank and sump and when I mean extreme I mean extreme. It keeps everything clean and helps in keeping my water parameters steady thx
