How much gph should go through a protein skimmer?

I have a SWC skimmer rate for a 200g tank. I use it for a 75g set up but the pump has gone on me so I am looking for a replacement. Now I am wondering what you all think is the best GPH pump to put through it? The bubble chamber is 8.5" round and 20" tall.

I'd look up the factory specs on the pump it came with and try to match the new pump as closely to the original one as possible.

Just thought I would update you guys a little very little help from SWC. I sent Pictures of the pump and of the skimmer asking if he could tell me what the pump was and what was is specs. All I got was a reply stating sorry I did not have any of those pumps on stock any more. I replied back once again asking for the specs and he has not got back to me in over a week. Here are some pictures of the Skimmer. Any one recognize the pump?

That looks like an ocean runner pump. Same pump reef octopus was using.

It looks like an OceanRunner 2500 or 3500. AquaMedic uses them on the Turbo 5000 Shorty that I have. It's a good solid pump although a bit pricey last time I looked. But then I hate to over spend. :wink:

Sorry to hear about the lack of help from SWC. Customer service is rarely considered important... until you need it!

The measurements of the old pump are 6" long x 4.5" tall x 4" wide.

Looks like a match Reefing Madness it's a OTP 2000GT.

I your opinion is this a good pump or should I look at changing the plumbing to support a new needle wheel pump?

OTP is a very good pump. But if your wanting to keep up with the big boys, and don't mind spending some $$ on a pump, then thats where I'd be heading.

Same GPH or if you have to go slightly bigger. The pumps are just better.

I also looked at the skimmer plumbing and it looks like I will have no problems switching over to a needle wheel pump.
