I have never heard of 10X for a return pump. I have always heard 4 to 5 times your water volume for return pump. If you have SPS then I would shoot for 40 to 50 times your display volume including your return pump. I have around 60 now and will be shooting for 80X.

save the real flow for closed loop, powerheads, wave makers, etc.
I have approx. 30x flow in my soft coral tank, and more than twice that in my zoanthid tank.

I never run more than 1200 GPH thru the sump. I run about 50X in the tank but I want a slower flow thru my sump for a couple reasons. First I want the skimmer ample time to pickup anything in the water. If it is moving too fast you will miss some things. Second I hate to waste power on a huge return pump when it can be better spent in the tank. Last I alos hate the noise from a water fall comming from the sump. If your running 4000 gph thru the sump it is going to be very loud.

Ya, the skimmer and return flow they say should be the same, but the skimmer intake can not take in all the return water unless it is directed thru plumbing right to the skimmer so that is a misconseption. So many things are what works for me in my tank, and that is true, but it may work at the minium but never experience what rality is and how much better there tank could and would be!!!!!!!!!!!!
