How much live rock for a 12g?

Imo, anywhere between 12-16 lbs would be good. You don't want to put too much because it will take away from water volume but you want enough porous rock to generate bacteria to support life. It also depends if you are going to attach a sump or fuge, which will allow you to put less than my guess.

for me, there isnt a "rule" for live rock, i mean how much can you truely fit in a 12 gallon tank? i'd say probably around 8-10 lbs, or so depending on the shapes, sizes, and density and it depends on what you want the aquascaping to look like... my friend has a 30 gallon tank with just 2 pieces of figi rock that weighs only 10lbs total or less... he has no sump, just a clip on skimmer and enough light for corals.... his systems been like this for 2 years, with out problems. he's got favias, acros, duncans, anemones, a couple clowns and damsels.

if i were you i would ad only one piece. I would find the most pourous piece of LR that looks cool and ends up being around 10 lbs and go with it. dont waste your time with dense pieces. because than Lbs per gallon goes out the window and it will just take up your water volume.

what ever you want.... or what ever looks good... my 220 display is riddled with like 400lbs and it does great but it looks ugly and is crowded.."re-doing it" as we speak...
my frag tank is a 100gal and has 15lbs if that and i plan on removing it soon... my frag tank is bare bottom and will be rock-less soon just a skimmer and dosing vodka/mb7..."best way to keep it clean" ;)

It does depend on what you would like to keep. I would start with about 10 pounds of good porous rock and go from there. Keep in mind that when you purchase some corals that they will come attached to pieces of live rock.

do you want more fish or more coral and it also depends on the coral you want.

When you guys say find the most porous piece of LR you can, how exactly can you tell how porous it is?
