So many variables can affect this but if you stay consistent then your nitrate number should stay consistent to.

This is my first tank and they started out at a healthy 5ppm but have since bottomed out. Probably from the hair algae that has bloomed. I hope once that has receded it will go up again. My phosphates have always been 0. I might have to start dosing these because there is only so much feeding one can do before it just gets wasted. I also just got into corals so it's possible they're also using these.

I should add that my tank is only 11 months old. I saw varied nitrate levels over the early and middle months but now that I have full fish bioload and lot of corals and a good fuge going my nitrates have stabilized in the 10 to 12 range depending on biweekly water change.

Tank maturity seems to stabilize the number as long as you are consistent with feeding and tank maintenance.

Being new to this, if I can't get my nitrates and phosphates up naturally (feeding, etc) is there a single product that can be doses or would I have to dose independently? I have just started to look into this since my nitrates decided to go on vacation.

1st bay Small amount of chaeto in "refugium" .
2nd bay Mantis 120 skimmer I hope is now run in and loads of bio bricks and the 2 Polyplabs bio genesis bricks.
3rd bay more bio blocks, purigen, matrix.
Why I am at 35ppm is beyond me

I can't answer accumulation but I can tell you I test nitrate and ammonia only once every month and every time my nitrates are under 3ppm

Lol. I have been there battling it in the past and know the feeling! My advice is to focus on the export mechanisms(skimmer/refugium/scrubber/carbon dosing/etc). Water changes can help but generally it is a losing battle if they are continually going up and that is how you try to control them.

Were they stable after you stopped dosing?

Stabil but elevated somewhat. I was still learning how some coral foods like reef roids or reef chili can raise your numbers. Modified to only frozen foods twice a day and coral foods twice a week. Started dosing PNS probio which has really helped the tank. All natural bacteria supplement that actually slightly lowers nitrates and phosphate. Keeps my filter sock clean for a week. Got my fuge going well to and now the numbers have stabilized for over a month at 10 nitrates and .05 phosphate. I think tank maturity at 11 months is helping now because other parameters are staying essentially consistent now to but I do dose alk and cal now.

Thanks for this! I have made a note about these. I'm going to give my tank some more time. It's only 8 months wet but I think I might need these. In all the years I've had freshwater tanks I was never able to get 0 nitrates. Now that I want them they have evaporated into thin air without even trying.
