How much rarer are Darwin Clowns compared to the Orange?

Hi all, are the Darwin Clowns much rarer than the regular orange ones? Do they tend to be at the same sizes or do they usually come in a bit larger for you? Will they readily pair with the normal orange one?

If they are both ocellaris species. You can have different variations, but if they are the same species you should be good. Just don't get a Darwin ocellaris and then an orange percula sp. or other clown. Get same species

Darwin are occellaris - and they're relatively common in the hobby. In the wild they're in a pretty narrow range of Australia.

If you see Mocha clowns for sale - they're the cross between standard and Darwin morphs.

Do the Darwins generally come in more sporadically and at larger sizes than the standard ones?

I have a Captive bred Darwin clown that I ordered through Algae barn, it actually came from Biota If your interested in one look on both websites, I’ve had him for about 6mos. Beautiful fish. I have to say I was not impressed with Biotas shipping at all, he was in a very small bag and barely enough water.

I can't wait till some one brings in wild caught clowns again. I want the neon orange and neon reds back. They lost the color for pattern.

NYaquatic had some wild Darwins not that long ago. I miss wild clowns. The CBB ones are goofy.

I see so the vast majority of “Darwin Clowns” on the market today aren’t authentic ones derived from wild stock? If so then what are these Black and White Clownfish? Are they an artificially propagated / created breed?

These are the “Black Ocellaris” I’m referring to. Are they not naturally occurring?

Read the article again. Is the guy saying that these Black and White Ocellaris are just “failed” attempts at creating Black Snowflakes rather than being derived directly from the original Australian stock?

Beautiful. I’ve decided to get a black and orange one. My LFS gets the black ones in at larger sizes than the orange ones so the black will most likely end up being the female.

Do female Clowns get to 4”? And how big was your black one when you got her?

I have both. They came from two different tanks at the lfs it took them a few hours abs they have been best buds for life. Rarely do they swim apart

My black one was probably about 1.5” when purchased and is now over 3” at the two year mark. Four inches is possible, but not all Occelaris females will get that big, and it takes time. She also gets plenty of live food and is larger now than when those pics were taken. I will try and grab a more recent one.

Great thanks. My LFS doesn’t seem to get in the black ones smaller than 1.5”-2”. The orange ones go for as small as slightly under an inch. If I get a black one (or any Ocellaris Clown) in the 1.5”-2” range or even 2.5”, am I at risk of getting an old fish or one that’s too grumpy?
