Planning a post-crash recovery tank (ref: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/tank-crash.704382/).

I'm trying to gauge how much water I should keep handy and make each week (in an apartment). IME, evaporation takes about 1% of tank volume per day if there's not something like a glass cover. (that is' if it's kept open or with a mesh lid)

So that means, I should keep 7% of the volume in the ATO (3 gallons of my proposed 40 gallon) and make 3 gallons a if i want to refill once a week. In addition to about 5 gallons per week in water changes. So, I should fill a 5 gallon bucket at a 3 gallon reservoir each week?

I go through right around a gallon per day. Fluctuates a bit depending on temp and humidity but not by much. I need to fill my 5 gallon ato every 5 days. It will be empty if I wait till the 6th day. I run 2x250 watt metal halides over a Red Sea Reefer xl 525 for lighting reference. Temp sits at 77.5.

I go thru a gal a day on avg. It does change as the seasons change. In the winter months you are more likely to use more as the colder weather lowers humidity, thus allowing the air to absorb more. In the summer its the opposite.

I pretty much always have 30+ gallons of RODI available.

I'd like to but I live in an apartment. space is at a premium, especially in non-carpeted, non-living room areas. (my RODI is tucked next to the washing machine.....)
