How much water is in my Brute?

Stealing picture from another member. I have a 20g brute. I filled it up to the top edge of the larger indentation under the handle on the side. Is that 15, 17, 18 gallons?

How do I know so I can properly calculate how much salt to dump in.

I'm sure someone has figured this out before.

On my 10g brute that indent where the handles are is about 9G of water. I measured this myself going 1G at a time making marks along the way. I’d guess on a 20 you’re looking at 18G ish depending.

so that was another question...is it ok to mark it off with a sharpie on the inside? i didn't think so but saw another member who did that...just couldn't make out his numbers.

I marked the outside because I wasn’t sure. To see the number just shine a flashlight from the inside is what I do.

cant tell if that's a 16, 17, or 18. Even tried zooming in.

Just by the distance between the lines I’d almost say it’s a 16. Maybe try 16G of salt and if it’s more you know it’s higher

Get a 5 gal container and dump 5 gal into the Brute can...then mark that on the inside as 5g. Then add another 5 gal and mark that one as 10g, etc... This is how I did my Brute cans (32g ones) and it works very well.

That's my plan with the empty one but unfortunately, I filled this before I did that

true but then the gap between the 15 you can see and the 16 would be quite large. assuming it's 16 the gap between 15 and 16 seems to be double that of 16 to 19...which could be true given the expanding diameter but gut tells that doesn'tright.

Oh weird I didn’t see that. Here are my marks on the 10g they don’t decrease in space much.

LOL I have this problem with the white 5 gal HPDE containers I just picked up, its not obvious where the 5th gallon is at the top. Filling to 4 and then adding the last one in from the other one

crap...well 1) thank you for your pic! 2) you made me realize the mistake I just made. My water was at the lower ridge to the right in your pic and I mis-visually converted in the pic I posted earlier. Sooooo....now I've probably got too much salt in my water.

Good thing I: 1) stopped one scoop short & might have counted one I didnt actually add so maybe 2 scoops short assuming the 1/2 cup salt per gallon rule. Maybe I'll be right on target in the end. lol. 2) Have room left to add more RO.

My plan was to undercut, mix, bring up to temp, test salinity.

First time doing this a lot of learning going on here!

About halfway between... call it 15.5
Trying to Sharpie at the water line might not be the most scientific measurement.

well i must be one lucky SOB. After 7 hours of mixing and heating to 78 my hana salinity checker jumped to 1.028 and then settled down to 1.026 as the checker got to temp. either that or its faulty
