Sadly I have to admit I only check my overflows during deep cleaning day which is everyother month.
Well today I found my Flame Angel that has been missing for about 2 weeks in the back right overflow. I have covers on both overflows so how his big butt got in there is a mystery in itself lol. I also had to remove a few dozen snails and Hermit crabs. The good thing was there was very little to nothing to even clean in that side lol. The detritus on the left side was awful.
I put the flame back in the main display with thoughts that maybe his butt would have had a come to Jesus while in there that long and calmed down. Well within 2 minutes he was back to his normal tank jerk self as he is trying to chase everything around as normal. Just amazing how the smallest fish in the tank can be the biggest jerk! Well I guess the vacation is over for the rest of the fish! If the wife wasn't standing there when I found him his butt would have been packed in a bag and been on the free fish market.

Can't say I check mine all that often either. Mine being a Waterbox might be a little harder to see in although I have used a mirror to look in there :-)

my overflows are clear glass, so I can see through them. I dont look very often though. Ill glance at them when doing water changes to see if I need to suck any detritus out of them. When I had a diamond goby, I had to check it multiple times a day though. Eventually the overflow batter won and I lost that fish unfortunately

What you mean I’m supposed to check it!! Lol

No really mine is a bit ‘funky’ and has loads of Aiptasia hanging in there. I think they feel safer there in view of the peppermint shrimps rampaging around the display.

I usually clean it once a year or so as part of a water change.

I have to fish wrasses out of there every couple of weeks, but for the most part, I leave them be. I do have a nice collection of hermits and snails in there that I should probably pull out sometime.

I've never cleaned mine. I check it about every 6 months or so using a mirror to be sure nothing crazy is going on in there. Mine is the back center and hard to reach, so I'm guessing if I did clean it I would have to use a shop vac to do so.

Not sure I have ever looked in there. Im afraid to open it now. Only thing I have done is to crack the top while adjusting bean animal here and there.
