How Often do you Clean an Algae Scrubber?

This is 12 days growth on a brand new ATS. it is a waterfall style. I tried the bubble style very briefly (DIY) and switched.. so i don't know how long they take. I will say the stuff that grows varies.. bright green turf to brown slime depending on the "day".

Mine is still slimy, and it has been running for 7 or 8 years.
